Wolf Canyon will have a Military PRIDE assembly on November 30th in the school auditorium (grades K-2 9:15 am – 9:45 am and grades 3-6 10:00 am – 10:30 am. The purpose of this assembly is to honor our families serving in the military and explain the reason behind the holiday. We would like to invite all family members who have served and are currently serving in the armed forces to participate and wear their uniforms.

Wolf Canyon is collecting Toys as part of the Districtwide Toy Drive to support needy families. If you would like to donate a toy (new only) please bring the unwrapped toy to the school office. The Toy Drive runs for 1 week only – November 26 – 30. All toys will be collected and distributed to those in need in time for Christmas.

Learn how your school is preventing English Learner students from becoming ‘Long Term English Learners’ at upcoming parent workshops. We will offer two sessions, the first in English on 11/28 and the second in Spanish on 12/6. Both sessions will provide free child care (ages 2 and up) and translation services. The “Draw a Wolf’ yearbook cover contest is back. All entires should be drawn on “normal” sized paper (8.5 x 11 white copy paper) and may be turned in to the school office no later than November 30th.

Looking Ahead – Mark your calendar for the Annual Wolf Canyon Kids Art Fair Friday, December 7 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Not only is this a great way to support the school but you will have a great masterpiece to hang on your walls at home or at your office. Please remember to RSVP so we will have your child’s artwork on display. If not you will still be able to purchase your child’s work that night in the special designer frame. Also, on hand that evening are representatives from “Bricks 4 Kids” and “Smart Mind Robotics”. These programs will be offered in the 3rd and 4th quarter after school. To get more information and register your child stop by the classrooms that will host this information. Space is limited. Bricks 4 Kids will be offered for students in grades 1-3 and Smart Mind Robotics will be offered for students in grades 4-6.

Helmets Wanted

There is No School Monday, November 12 in honor of Veteran’s Day. However, Wolf Canyon will have a Military PRIDE assembly on November 30th in the school auditorium (grades K-2 9:15 am – 9:45 am and grades 3-6 10:00 am – 10:30 am. Federal Survey cards were sent home last week. It is very important that everyone take the time to complete, sign and date these federal survey cards no later than this Wednesday, November 13th. Much needed school funding is determined by this information.

Our Canned Food Drive continues through Nov. 15. Please support our community and donate canned or dry goods during this time. The top two classes that bring in the most canned goods will earn a pass for no homework for each student (good for one assignment.)

Our Fall Fundraiser ends this Friday, November 16. Please turn in your order forms before then, as late orders may not get delivered before the winter break. This is a wonderful opportunity to support PTA in earning much needed money for our school.

The Boxtops Campaign raised 1,154.00 in the first go round. Please clips those boxtops and send in for the 2nd round on Friday, December 21! This is a great way to earn easy money for the school.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered and/or supported our Red Ribbon Week, Bully No More and Law Enforcement Day activities. We appreciate the tremendous support!

Our Canned Food Drive begins tomorrow Oct. 29 through Nov. 13. Please support our community and donate canned or dry goods during this time.

Tuesday, October 30 from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm there is a Common Core Math Standards Session for parents at the Chula Vista Elementary School District office located on 84 East J. Street in Chula Vista.

Just a reminder that if your child rides his or her bike to school they must wear a helmet. If you have a slightly used helmet that your child no longer needs please consider donating it to the school and we will recycle helmets to ensure all students are safe.

Please note that students may not wear Halloween costumes to school this Wednesday. We want to make sure all costumes are in good shape for the many festivities throughout your neighborhoods and community after school. Please do not pack Halloween candy for snacks and/or lunch. We are a “Peanut free” campus and many of these candies contain peanuts or peanut oils which can be life threatening for some of our students.

Smoothie Thursdays will begin this week. Every Thursday after school Robek’s will be selling Smoothies for $3.00 each until the end of the school year. The school will receive 20% of the profits to support our Wireless Campaign.

Daylight Savings Day is next Sunday, November 4, 2012. Please remember to set your clocks back 1 hour on Saturday night November 3.

Discovery Elementary will hold a TB skin test clinic on Tuesday, November 6 with follow up on Thursday, November 8 for those interested in volunteering at Wolf Canyon and need an updated TB skin test on file. The TB skin test is good for 4 years.

The Masquerade Festival was a smashing success. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. A special shout out goes to Sally Crew and Cassandra Patterson for coordinating such a wonderful event!

RED RIBBON WEEK is this week, October 22 – 26. To celebrate this week’s events in style the PTA has donated a special limited edition Spirit Stick to be sold by Safety Patrol starting Wednesday until sold out. You will be able to sign a “Bully Free” pledge and have your name included on a poster in the auditorium.

Monday – Wear bright/neon clothes and sunglasses to demonstrate “I am too Bright to do Drugs.”
Tuesday – Wear your favorite sports apparel to “Team up and Tackle Drugs.”
Wednesday – Wear Red Day!
Thursday – Crazy Hair Day because “Drugs make you crazy.”
Friday – Show off your favorite socks and “Sock it to Drugs.”

BOO Grams will be on sale before and after school by Safety Patrol members for $1 all week. The Grams will be delivered Wednesday afternoon, October 31st. Say, “BOO to Drugs and Bullying as you support the Wolf Canyon Safety Patrol.

Thursday evening October 25 at 6:30 pm we have a “Bully No More” presentation. This presentation will give parents and family members important information about “Bullying” and what we as a Wolf Canyon community can do about it. Our special guest speaker is Helice “Sparky” Bridges founder and CEO of Difference Makers. She has received recognition from former first lady Barbara Bush, spoken at events with the Dali Lama and was the recipient of the 2005 TKF Gandhi Nonviolence Award. Her stories have been featured in who has been highlighted in Chicken Soup for the Soul, Chicken Soup for the Soul at Work and Chicken Soup for the Soul of America.

Friday, October 26 is our annual “Law Enforcement Day” where family and community members highlight their roles in Law Enforcement on our blacktop from 9:00 am – 11:00 am. If you hold a job in law enforcement and would like to participate contact the school office at 619-482-8877.

The final “Walk to School” event is on Friday, October 26. We will meet next door at “All Seasons Park”, weather permitting, as early as 8:00 am and walk to school as a group at about 8:15 am. Parents are welcome to walk with us. In the event of rain this event will be cancelled.

Looking Ahead:

We will be collected cans for our Canned Food Drive next week from October 29 – November 13. All canned foods will go to families in our community who are struggling.

Discovery Elementary will hold a TB skin test clinic on November 6 and 8 for those interested in volunteering at Wolf Canyon and need an updated TB skin test on file. The TB skin test is good for 4 years.

The PTA “CANDY DRIVE” ends Thursday, October 18. Please help our Wolf Canyon PTA by donating bags of Halloween Candies. All candy collected will be given out as prizes during the Masquerade Festival scheduled on Saturday, October 20 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm here at the school. Classrooms that donate the most will earn Scholastic Credit towards classroom books.

The Masquerade Festival tickets go on sale Monday, October 15-19 before and after school. Presale tickets will be $10.00 per child ages 3 and older. Tickets at the door will be $12.00 per child 3 and older. PTA members who attend the PTA General Meeting this Tuesday, October 16 at 7:00 pm can purchase tickets and will receive one free admission to the Haunted House.

Welcome to Quarter 2 at Wolf Canyon Elementary School which begins on Tuesday, October 9 at 8:45 am. We are on the regular schedule with dismissal at 3:00 pm for kindergarteners and 3:15 pm for all other students.

October has many special events beginning with our Walk to School Fridays this Friday, October 12. For the month of October on Fridays only we will meet at the “All Seasons Park” next door on Magdalena, weather permitting, as early as 8:00 am and walk to school as a group at about 8:25 am. In the event of rain this event will be cancelled.

Just a reminder that on Rainy Days students report to the auditorium from 8:00 am – 8:30 am. At 8:30 am students in grades 2-6 report to their classrooms and read quietly until the 8:45 am bell. Please plan to leave earlier to avoid traffic back ups on rainy days. In the event of rain at the end of the day during dismissal, those picking up children should do so directly at the classrooms. Students will not be sent to the front of the school to stand in the rain.

Parent/Teacher conferences continue this week which means we are on minimum day schedule the entire week. Kindergarten students are dismissed at 1:30pm and 1st through 6th grade students are dismissed at 1:45pm all this week.

The Book Fair is opened Monday – Thursday this week from 8:15 – 10:00 in the morning and 1:15 – 3:00 in the afternoons. Stop by and support our school PTA fundraiser.

PTA needs volunteers for Red Ribbon Week and the Masquerade Festival is coming up in the month of October. If you are interested in volunteering for either of these events contact the school office at 619-482-8877. The PTA General Meeting is this Tuesday evening September 18 at 7:00pm. Childcare is provided.

It’s not to late to become a member of the PTA. Kindergarten is in the lead with 33% of their families joining PTA. Mrs. Jones class is in the lead with the most memberships overall 21 families out of 31. The grade level and class with the highest membership will receive a class party from me – Mrs. McLaren. The last day to join is this Friday!

WANTED: Box Tops for Education. Many food items that come in boxes have a “Box Tops for Education” bar coded label. Cut this out, send it school and we can exchange these labels for technology tools, sports equipment, art supplies and much more. This is a very easy way to support the school especially during these tough financial times. Send the Box Tops in to your child’s teacher or the school office. The class that turns in the most “Box Tops for Education” by October 8 will receive a Special Prize!

The Book Fair opens Monday afternoon, September 10th through Thursday, September 20th. This is a great way to support your child’s reading and support the school. Volunteers are needed. In addition, all volunteers will earn Scholastic Dollars for their child’s teacher. It’s a great way to support your child’s classroom library. Remember to stop by before or after school each day or before or after your Parent/Teacher conference.

Support the 4th grade fundraiser and come out to the Otay Ranch Mall Chili’s for dinner on Tuesday, September 11 between 3:00pm and 10:00pm. Don’t forget to bring the flyer and give it to the waiter/waitress when you pay the bill.

Thank you to all who volunteered and participated in our Family Olympics Day. It was a great success.

Friday, August 31 is picture make-up day.

Is your child an English learner. Would you like to know the English level of your child and what programs are provided to support him/her. Then come to the ELAC meeting on Wednesday, August 29 at 9:00am in the YMCA room to learn more.

You or your child may qualify for a UCSD research study on weight and health. Participants who qualify will participate in a 3 month study that includes a manual and group sessions that will involve information about their food intake, exercise and how to live a healthy lifestyle.
